I recently interviewed one of the biggest names in Beauty here in the Middle East – Mr Bassam Fattouh. Not only is Bassam on speed dial to the most prominent celebrities in the Arab world, he also has own make up line with an international fan base. Personally, I find Bassam’s make up line one of the best internationally – it definitely leads up with names like MAC and Make up for Ever.  Whilst Bassam was in Dubai, I headed to his hotel for a quick chat on Dubai, beauty, his career as well as tips for women in the region.

www.bassamfattouh.com

How does it feel to be in Dubai?

It feels good… Love how you brought your coffee from Starbucks.

Addict… You come here often?

I do, I love this city. It’s very energetic.

You need to be partly based in Dubai now…

*laughs* yes… I love Beirut though!

How did you get into beauty?

Well, that was a long time ago. I’ve always loved art, painting, everything that has to do with Beauty & Fashion. When you’re young, you don’t really know what you want. I was just driven by make up, so I went to Beauty school. That’s how I really started…

What has been your career highlight?

Starting my brand. It’s a dream come true… I’ve always wanted my own brand. The way to be become international is to have your own brand. Being International is to enter the global market. It’s not about traveling to the States one day & Beirut the other…

What advice would you give aspiring Make up artists?

Just follow your heart and be devoted. Have inspiration, but never follow. It’s all about trial and error. You can never literally LEARN art.

What are 3 make up products women should always own?

Lipstick – It’s like a face lift, The Kajal (kohl), and a blush.

What mistakes do you see most women not doing/doing wrong?

Blending, blending, blending! Eyes, everywhere.

Anything else?

Foundation colour, but the region is getting better at it. Choose your right colour, or you can end up looking grey. If you have olive skin, never go for a pink undertone – go for a yellow/peach one.

How important is good skin?

VERY important. You need to have good skin to have good make up. People here spend more on their make up than skincare, but people tend to forget how important is skincare.

What advice can you give?

Everyone’s skin is different but never sleep with make up and use protection.

What tips can you give people with dark circles?

Sadly, they are usually hereditary. Try to see a dermatologist to try treating it. If not, just go for a really good undertone. Apply the concealer on the arch, not close to the eyelids or you will end up with a shrinked eye. For the colour, go for the same skin tone – never lighter… Sometimes a bit darker. If you like the brightened look, add an illuminator after.

What about tips on how to avoid shiny skin?

Primer before the foundation. Cushion light primer by Bassam Fattouh is great as it absorbs the sebum before applying. Use a loose powder, and never a compact powder.

Thank you Bassam!!

Recommendations: Laser hair removal in Dubai.

When looking for great laser, its all about bearable pain and great results. 98 percent of the lasers I’ve tried haven’t won for me so I’m always on the hunt. I recently went around Dubai, and checked out the best in Laser Hair Removal. If there’s something you’re on the hunt for, suggest it in the comment box below and that might be my next round up.

What? Laser treatments at Silkor.

Where? Silkor’s branch on Jumeirah beach road

The Laser type: Their signature laser is Diode and they also have Q Switch laser Medlite treatment that they launched one year ago is perfect for the thin hairs on the face and around the body to avoid turning it into coarse hair. (Bleaches hair then falls down)

Pain factor: The laser is probably the most painful laser I’ve ever tried but it’s also the laser I’ve seen the best results from. The Q Switch laser felt like a light rubber band, I was answering emails whilst getting that done.

Consultation or follow up? I came in for a consultation to check the area in advance, and got a follow up for both lasers two weeks later.

Results: Hands down, the winning results. Painful, but effective.

Price: Underarms AED600, Bikini line from AED800-AED1200

Extras: The women are super helpful, but book in advance as they fill up fast!

www.silkor.com

What? Soprano laser at Dermalase Clinic

Where? Jumeirah beach road

The Laser type: Soprano Diode laser

Pain factor: 3/10 – you feel the heat, but for the effect of the Diode – practically painless.

Consultation or follow up? No, they say the Soprano reaches all the follicles so they don’t have

Results: I was so happy with the results, and will have to come back.

Price: Underarms: AED500 and Bikini Line: AED700

dermalaseclinic.com

What? Lightsheer laser at Eternel Med Spa

Where? Beach Road right next to Dermalase.

The Laser type: Lightsheer, which is a kind of Diode.

Pain factor: They now have a new machine modification with a larger handle so quicker, which makes it less painful. It is painful, but bearable – a sucking sensation.

Consultation or follow up? No.

Results: Every 6-8 weeks and hair decreases by 10 percent each treatment.

Price: AED500 for Underarms, AED1000 bikini

eternelmedspa.com

What? Laser Hair removal at Kaya Skin clinic.

Where? They have a few branches, I visited the Town Centre one.

The Laser type: Nd: YAG laser

Pain factor: 2/10 – less painful than most of the lasers I’ve done.

Consultation or follow up? The treatment starts off with a doctor consultation to access skin and hair for the right energy power. You are then given a white robe to wear in order to not mess up clothes and a more comfortable experience.

Results: No results at all in the beginning so be patient. I slightly saw results a few weeks later. Kaya said I need a minimum of 7 to see results, but I’m not willing to take a chance of paying for 7 sessions to see if the laser really works or not…

Price: Underarms – AED600 and Bikini – AED800

All in One: RMS beauty Raw Coconut cream

As mentioned last month, I was recently introduced to RMS beauty and this has got to be another favorite product. This can be used as a make up remover, a cleanser or as a moisturizer. I love it as a moisturizer as it’s lightweight yet super nourishing with a subtle coconut scent. My only downfall is it’s very similar to organic coconut oil, which is cheaper. Available on net-a-porter.com

Range: L’Occitane 5 essential oils

I remember discovering this shampoo at the Inter continental hotel in Beirut and always falling in love when I wash my hair there (I’m always put off by hotel shampoos) Because of how much I loved it, I started using the range at home – shampoo, conditioner, mask etc. Nourishing, gives the hair volume and the smell stays on the hair all day – my hair always feels soft and silky post shower.

Foundation: Max Factor Face Finity All Day Flawless 3 in 1 Foundation

Max Factor is one of those brands I recommend to anyone that wants great professional make up on a budget. They make some of the best mascaras, eyeliners and foundations. I’ve been currently using the Face Finity foundation, which is a long lasting, great coverage – yet still light – kind of foundation. It’s also a 3 in 1 – primer, foundation and concealer. If I’m on the go, this is the perfect foundation to use.

illuminator: Revlon Photoready Skinlights

I’m a sucker for illuminators and currently obsessed with Revlon’s photo ready skinlights that I have been using all depending on the occasion – I’ll use the pink light rose for the day, and the more bronzed one for night. I love mixing a little bit with my foundation to give off a radiant dewy finish.

Fragrance: Jo Malone Peony Blush & Suede

I love Jo Malone – the quality, the packaging and the fragrances. Depending on personal taste, there are just ones I fall in love with more than others. I LOVE the new fragrance Peony Blush & Suede. With a top note of Red Apple, heart of Peony and base of Suede, the fragrance has the perfect mix of floral, fruity and luxurious suede.

Foundation: Marc Jacobs beauty Genius Gel foundation

I must say I couldn’t wait till the Marc Jacobs beauty line launched. I was intrigued to see how it was going to do…  The gel foundation is light, buildable and also has Coconut extracts which help hydrate the skin. Perfect for day and night. The foundation is available at Sephora in the Middle East.

Nail Polish: Chanel Magic

I’m a sucker for Blue Nailpolish… and let’s just be honest – no one makes more chic colours than Chanel. The brand launched a deep navy blue shade for Vogue’s Fashion night out which is part of a special edition collection. (Nuit Magnifique)

Nude Gloss: MAC Cremesheen glass in ‘Calypso’

Finding the perfect nude tone is always tricky as well as finding it in a great tube of lipstick or gloss. The shade Calypso is the perfect neutral without looking too dark or washed out & the gloss gives a light gloss, whilst hydrating the lips. Neutral with a subtle pink. A nude gloss winner.

Brown smokey eye: Lancome Hypnose star eyes in Brun Adoré

As mentioned previously, I’m currently obsessed with the brown smokey eye. I’ve moved from the ashy greasy to a more natural look… This eyeshadow palette includes a range of browns, golds and black – which blends into the perfectly natural burn smokey eye. Just add the liner, mascara and you’re good to go.

Skincare system: Chanel Le Jour de Chanel, La Nuit de Chanel and Le Weekend de Chanel

Chanel have just come out with a skincare system. Le Jour de Chanel is made to reactivate the skin for energy (Jasmine extract) that stimulates and for radiance (Salicylic acid) which exfoliates the skin. The Nuit de Chanel to recharge that soothes (using Frankincense extract) that carries out cellular repair and plumps (using sustained-release hyaluronic acid) that penetrates the skin’s core and Le Weekend de Chanel which renews, softens the skin (using May Rose water) and promotes hydration (using glycolic acid) – My current beauty obsession.

Range: Bourjois Happy light

Bourjois had a happy light range four years ago that they discontinued and they just came out with a new and updated range of Happy light, which is super exciting. The range consists of a primer, foundation and concealer. I’ve loved all of them especially the primer, which is super light, feels good on the skin and gives off an airbrushed matte finish. The foundation provides coverage that you can build up, as well as a hydrated dewy finish. All on a budget too…

Hairspray: Davines This is a strong hairspray

I learnt about the brand, Davines on a photo shoot last year and have never loved a hairspray as much as the ones Davines make… Firstly, can’t miss the quirky name, which straight up tells me that it’s a strong hairspray. Paraben-free, adds structure, smells good, endures humidity yet still easy to remove.

Make up Brushes: Lancome brushes

I love finding great make up brushes – they make a huge difference to your make up. Lancome introduced their brushes to the Middle East, and I’ve been obsessed with several of them. MAC make one of the best brushes on the market, and Lancome is definitely at the same level. My favourites include the Foundation brush, Powder & light blush effect brush, and the all over shadow brush.

Concealer: Clarins Instant Concealer

I find it difficult finding good concealers and this month I’m loving the Instant concealer from Clarins. The tube is easy to carry around, the liquid cream smoothes the skin and really gives off a brightening effect as well as decent coverage that can be layered up without feeling thick.

Eyeliner: Smashbox Limitless eyeliner in Onyx

I can’t leave home without applying eyeliner so I’m quite picky when looking for a good pencil liner. I’m currently obsessed with the one by Smashbox – it reminds me of the one I’m obsessed with from Urban Decay. Lasts all day, waterproof, creamy as well as includes Vitamin E and Jojoba Oil.

Toner & Make up remover: Institut Esthederm Osmoclean Hydra-replenishing fresh lotion

Love when a product can be used as a dual… The Osmoclean Hydra-replenishing fresh lotion can be used on a cotton pad to remove make up and tone the skin. I like using it during the day if my face doesn’t need a full cleansing session, but just to wipe off the make up to give my skin some area to breathe…

Nude lipstick: Bobbi Brown Lip Color in Baby Pink

I love my nudes, and I can never get enough of collecting perfect nude lipsticks. I love the Baby Pink shade by Bobbi brown – balanced combination of Pink & beige, smells good that gives a long lasting creamy finish.

Star product: Caudalie Elixir

Women around the world swear by this product, so I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. Partly toner, and partly a serum mist of essential oils and plant active ingredients. To be used in between foundation and your powder, the spray smoothes the skin, tightens pores as well as adds a dewy finish and keeps your skin feeling fresh.

Spray tan: Lauren’s Way Self Tan Bronzing Mousse

Those Essex girls sure do know how to get their tan on. This month, I’ve been using this mousse in the Medium colour from the Essex reality show, Lauren Goodger – the mousse which is super easy to use and really gives you a strong tan. Light and doesn’t streak easily, I like applying this with a tanning mitt (that they also sell) a few hours before going out. They also have options of buying a kit with the moisturiser and other products from Lauren’s Way.

Hair Oil: Maison de Joelle Intense Nutritive

I’m always so impressed when I find amazing products that have come out of the Middle East. I love my hair oils, and I recently started using the Intense Nutritive (Intense nutrition) oil by Joelle Mardinian of MBC (who is also a friend)’s line, Maison de Joelle. Enriched with Babassu oil and silk proteins – this really hydrates the oil, relieves damaged hair as well as makes your hair smell soooo good. It has a lovely tinge of Vanilla.

Hair Perfume: Herra Protect Hair Perfume

A dual genius product – hair perfume and protection spray in one. The fragrance is a mix of Vanilla, Jasmine and Musk – which makes a super lovely combination, and has a mix of 3 key ingredients that protect the hair Glycerin (for moisture), Olive extract (to protect it from hair pollution) and Sunflower extract (that protects the hair from the UV). One every woman should have on her beauty cupboard.

Hair Brush: Maria Dowling brushes

Finding high quality brushes is very important – whether it’s for the care of your hair or just good quality styling. I recently popped over for a clay mask (look out for my review) and left with a few brushes by Maria Dowling herself. My favourites include the paddle cushion brush and the ceramic spiral brushes.

Tricks of the Trade from MAC’s Senior Artist, Vimi Joshi

Dressed in a Burberry hearts shirt

I recently met up with MAC Cosmetic Middle East’s lovely Senior Artist, Vimi Joshi (who has worked with a bunch of Bollywood, Arabic and Hollywood stars) for a one on one make up session which was all about the 3D dimension and ‘a whole lotta nothing’ skin… (how we like make up to look… great make up yet it looks like you’re not wearing anything.)  Vimi gave me a 3D sculpted face using different shades of foundation. I learnt a ton of tricks that I had to share with all of you…

-ALWAYS start with a lip conditioner… we always forget that and for a perfect finish, we need hydrated skin.

-Spray a generous amount of fix+ by MAC for hydrated skin.

-Use a Brush to apply a cream on the face, be generous. A hydrated face makes your make up look even better.

-If you’d like a radiant base, go for MAC Natural radiance – a primer that brightens up your face.

-If you like giving your face some 3D dimension, go for the MAC Studio Sculpt foundation.

-For longevity, layer and buff rather than just spraying it with a make up fix.

-For an intense eye pick me up as well as natural lashes, go for MAC lashes #7.

The 6 Essential Vitamins and Minerals – and why we need them!

noorvitamins

It’s easy to forget if we’re getting enough of the minerals and vitamins we need in our diet. I asked Samia from treehuggercompany.com to share the details we need… Find out how the vitamins are helpful and how you can incorporate them in your diet.

VITAMIN D
What is it and How does it help? Vitamin D – or the “sunshine vitamin” is naturally synthesized in the skin when exposed to enough sunlight and is important for keeping our bones strong and healthy because it helps the body absorb calcium. Its deficiency causes symptoms of tiredness, bone pain or muscle weakness and may also prevent diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes. However, Vitamin D deficiency disproportionately afflicts Muslim communities because of their modest dress, and also in the Middle East where people spend more time in cars away from direct sunlight.
Where can I find it? The best sources of Vitamin D (apart from your regular dose of sunshine!) include oily fish and cod liver oil. It is also found in milk, butter and egg yolks, but nothing beats sunshine and oily fish when it comes to Vitamin D!

CALCIUM
What is it and How does it help? A mineral which is essential to developing and maintaining good bones and also helps your muscles to move (including your heartbeat) and helps communication between the brain and the body parts. Calcium deficiency may cause rickets in children and in adults: brittle bone disease and osteoporosis.
Where can I find it? Found in dairy products like milk, cheese also in nuts, soya based products and surprisingly in green leafy vegetables such as broccoli! If taking supplements, look for one which combines Vitamin D with calcium as your body needs Vitamin D to help absorb and retain this mineral.

VITAMIN A
What is it and How does it help? Is actually a group of vitamins (retinoids and carotenoids). The ‘night-vision’ vitamin helps strengthen your body’s immunity against infections, helps skin, teeth, the linings in your nose and helps you to see in dim light.
Where can I find it? Sweet potatoes (which also come under the ‘superfood’ category) are a good source for all types of Vitamin A. Then of course, carrots,  dark green leafy foods such as spinach and kale, animal liver, whole milk, fortified foods amongst others. Pregnant ladies need to avoid having too much Vitamin A though because large quantities wouldn’t be good for the baby.

VITAMIN B
What is it and How does it help? This is also a group of eight vitamins. These are essential for breaking down carbs for energy when you need it and also are important for making red blood cells which carry oxygen all around your body. Pregnant mothers should specially take vitamin supplements including the B Vitamin folic acid as it prevents some types of birth defects.
Where can I find it? Try to go wholegrain for getting a lot of Vitamin B and other health benefits! Stick to whole unprocessed foods including sources such as potatoes, beans, lentils, eggs, peas, meat, fish, chicken, milk, cheese, fortified cereals, bread and of course leafy green vegetables. Processed foods made from white flour have lower levels of Vitamin B compared to their wholegrain counterparts!

VITAMIN C
What is it and How does it help? If you ever heard someone saying that Vitamin C was good for warding off the flu, they were right! Vitamin C helps prevent infections is also an antioxidant (preventing damage done by free radicals). It also helps healing wounds. Lack of vitamin C can cause anemia and in cases of severe deficiencies, it can cause scurvy.
Where can I find it? Good sources are fruits such as cantaloupes, strawberries, kiwi, mangoes, citrus fruits like oranges, and yet again vegetables like broccoli and others such as tomatoes, cabbage, spinach, sweet potatoes, green and red peppers. Foods lose their Vitamin C reserves if stored for a long time or during cooking, so raw fruits and vegetables are best.

IRON
What is it and How does it help? Feeling tired? Have your iron levels checked! Iron is an essential mineral and helps make red blood cells in the body. Its deficiency can cause anemia which can cause symptoms like fatigue. Pregnant women and women who have heavy menstrual bleeding may need iron supplements. Iron is especially important for development in children but must be taken with care as over-dosage can be harmful!
Where can I find it? Iron rich foods are meat, liver, beans and lentils, dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach, wholegrain foods.

Hair Tutorial: Festive hairstyles

Festivehair1 festivehair2 festivehair3 festivehair4festivehair5So excited to share that I’ve teamed up with Hair brand, Eideal for a monthly feature on how to get your hair done at home without having to run to the hairdressers or invest in hair styling appointments every time you have a different occasion. It’s the festive season which means Christmas lunches, Christmas parties, and New Years Eve. This month, I’ve gone for two looks within the Festive theme – both include wavy/curly hair – so it’s easily adaptable but here is a step to step guide on how to get your base followed by a more dressier and defined look too. PS as it’s festive season, here’s a promo code to get 25% discount on the products I used – just add the code TALA on www.eidealonline.com

Concept:

A step-by-step guide to glamorous, festive hair showing two looks that easily be adapted from day to night.

What you will need to complete the looks:

Hairdryer

Comb

Medium ceramic round barrelled brush

Volumizing spray

Medium hold hairspray

Wide-barrelled curling tong

Small-barrelled curling tong

Look 1 (Daytime)

Step 1 (Optional blowdry)

Soft and fine hair types can skip this stage and begin at step 2 with second-day hair, which will have a better grip. For thick and wavy hair types I would always begin with a blowdry to smooth the texture and create a clean canvas.

Spritz a volumizing spray at the root and rough dry the hair to 80%. Now, apply your heat protection and take smaller sections of the hair and, using a medium barrelled ceramic brush, smooth from top to bottom and wrap the hair around the barrel, this will create a loose curl. Be sure to curl the hair inwards and use the nozzle on your hairdryer when applying heat, this will give you more control. It is important to use a high-quality ceramic brush as the ceramic barrel speeds-up the drying process by conducing heat and will help to reduce frizz.

Step 2  (Wide-barrelled curls)

After your hair is completely dry allow it cool down, this will help to set your style. I have used my comb to create a deep side parting as I feel it always adds instant glamor to a look.

Next, take wide sections of the hair and wrap them around your wide-barrelled curling tongs, hold for a few moments and release. Again, I am curling inwards towards the face as this creates a more flattering look. I have used EIDEAL’s e-CURLER as it has an extra large 38mm barrel, which is coated in nano-silver and nano-titanium to offer additional heat protection and extra shine! Whilst I’m curling, I mist my hair with a medium hold hairspray to ensure my curls will stay in place.

Step 3 (Defining the curls)

Once the curls are in place I leave them to cool for 5 minutes. After my hair has cooled I use my fingers and a comb to loosen and define the curls. I use my tong to curl under any stray ends and add one, final mist of hairspray to complete the look.

Look 2 (Night)

Take this look from day to night with a few simple steps. This time we are going to work with smaller sections and a narrow curling tong to achieve the perfect, festive evening look.

Step 1 (Tight curls)

Working with small sections I repeat the curling process used for look one using a small-barrelled tong, this will create a set of springy, tight curls. After working my way around all of my hair I add a spritz of hairspray and leave my hair to cool.

Step 2 (Loosen and define)

Once my hair has cooled I use my fingers lightly to pull the curls apart and push them into shape. For some high impact volume I use my comb to tease the under layers before setting the style with some hairspray.

mariadowlingGet a Hair Detox… with a Clay mask at Maria Dowling.

If you ever read an article or asked some Dubai insiders on top hair salons in Dubai, Maria Dowling will definitely be in the top three. Believe it or not, I’ve never actually been to the salon nor have I met Maria before so I was super excited to come in for my first visit. As I can’t colour my hair due to my contract with Pantene (Maria is the queen of hair colour – she even has a service called colour correction.) So Maria suggested I go for a hair detox – with her Ritual Hair and Scalp clay – which is also called the hair and scalp facial developed by Maria herself two years ago. The treatment is used to detox hair from stress, over-styling and styling product overload. After washing your hair sans shampoo and conditioner, the clay was applied to the hair (it smells fresh and natural) and then I was given the most relaxing scalp massage to let the treatment infuse into the hair and scalp. The revitalising mask which is made out of powerful ingredients (clay, sesame oil, argan oil, lemongrass oil, vitamin B5, honey, jojoba oil, sunflower seed oil, Bergamot oil and Peppermint oil) was left on the hair for 20 minutes. The treatment is all natural, and Maria recommends it being done on the hair as a treatment once a month. My hair felt intensely cleansed and with great volume on the scalp – felt so good… made my blow-dry last a good two days too.

Ps parking is slightly difficult, but they have spaces within the next building.

Affordable-Luxury-at-De-La-Mer-Day-Spa

A Therapeutic facial… with a Nimue Therapeutic facial at De La Mer Day Spa, Dubai.

Ever had one of those days that you wanted a relaxing treatment but not on the body? This is when a relaxing facial comes in handy. I recently dropped by to De La Mer Day Spa for a Nimue facial. As my skin didn’t need a deep cleanse, I went for the therapeutic one. Nimue, a scientific Skincare brand from South Africa is popular among facials. My therapist, Tukta checked my skin to tailor the facial to my skin’s needs. Throughout the treatment, my skin was gently cleansed, a steamer was used to open my pores before enzyme exfoliation and finished off with a cooling mask. The face and neck was also massaged, which left me feeling pampered. My skin felt fresh, hydrated, and was glowing.

jetlagmassage

Cure Jetlag… with a Jetlag massage at the Ritz Hotel, Dubai.

As a regular traveler, including a recent trip to Toronto and back – Jetlag is something I deal with regularly. There’s nothing like a jet lag massage booked in your schedule right after arriving back home. I recently dropped by the Ritz Hotel (the beach side)’s new spa for a 60 minute Jet lag massage. The session itself incorporate different massage styles using lavender oil to soothe and relax. I definitely recommend you get this pampering session in the evening because it really makes you want to just get into bed for a long night of sleep due to how soothing it is. I highly recommend the therapist, Pinky – she’s amazing.

Aroma-Butter

Enrich your skin… with the Body Enrichment treatment at The Address Dubai Mall spa.

Feel like your skin feels super dry due to traveling or just Dubai’s humidity to AC weather? I strongly recommend The Address Hotel Dubai Mall Spa’s Body Enrichment treatment. A 90 mins enriching body treatment by the Aromatherapy Associates brand. As soon as I arrived, I was welcomed with a cold towel and glass of fresh Celery juice, before being taken to the Restore room (they have names for each one of their rooms.) The Enrich range is the top luxury one from Aromatherapy Associates range, and made into a pampering treatment. The treatment started off with a full body scrub which included coffee and jojoba before being asked to take a shower to apply the rich serum on the skin followed by the oil and body butter on the body whilst getting a scalp massage, and a deep hydrating mask on the hands and feet. My therapist, Bles was super sweet, so amazing and helpful – highly recommended.

addressdubaimall

Delay Ageing… with The Original Beauty Facial at The Address Hotel Spa Dubai Mall

With facials, you’ve got to choose what you’re going for before you book in. Do you want a deep cleansing with extraction? A relaxing treatment? or a Quick pick me up? I recently tried the Original Beauty Facial at the Address Hotel Spa Dubai Mall. The facial was made an an intensive anti-ageing treatment to help with elasticity as well as prevent wrinkles. They mentioned the massage includes a deep cleansing, yet I didn’t feel like my skin was squeaky clean with extractions but rather just soft (from the peel) as well as completely relaxed as my therapist was continuously massaging my face. A face massage is not only a great relaxation method, it also boosts circulation which gives your face a much needed flush. A collagen mask was then applied on the face – definitely one to go for if you would like a relaxing spa facial as well as a skin flush. The treatment is 75 mins and costs AED650.

Go Indian… with a Ayurvedic massage at Kempinski Hotel Spa, The Palm

I’m a massage junkie, so I’m constantly checking out different massages and treatments at spas. This month, I checked out Kempinski Hotel on the Palm’s Spa, Cinq Mondes and booked myself in for the Ayurvedic massage – a 60 mins Indian massage that was developed thousands of years ago in India, and is looked at as a Medical treatment. The massage consists of Fast and slow movements, starting with the front of your body moving to your back including a scalp massage – in a different order of your typical massage. I especially loved the fact that Warm sesame oil is used – which has a light and subtle scent, and doesn’t come on too oily so i was able to head to a meeting right after. Kempinski The Palm’s Spa have come out with an offer where you can use their gym and facilities if you book in for a treatment.

The massage costs AED500, and ask for Amita.

Tried & Tested: BLOW-DRIES in Dubai. (Part One)

$

I constantly get emails and questions from women asking me for recommendations on where to get blow-dries in Dubai… I scoured the city, tried different blow-outs in different areas, different salons with different prices. Check out my round up below. Let me know if you have one you think should be added to the list, or what you need help finding.

jetset

For… the BEST blow-dry.

What? Blowdry at Jetset

Where? They have salons all over the city. I’ve heard people’s preferred branch is Grosvener house but I prefer Palm Strip due to location.

The Process: A wash as soon as I arrived using delicious Kerastase products as well as a head massage. (plus points)

Experience: Nadim, my stylist didn’t exactly have a smile nor talkative (which I like… I can read my magazines, relax and check emails). He had an assistant stylist help out, which sped up the blow-dry followed by the curls he did with a curler.

Refreshments? I was asked if I wanted a cup of coffee, and was offered the latest magazines from Vogue UK, Vanity Fair to Local magazines – wish more salons had great magazines. They even offered to place my bag in one of their compartments. A very thought out salon… Go Negin Fattahi-Dasmal!

Results: My hair was perfect on day one – lasted all night. Day 2, it dropped slightly, but still good to keep.

What? Blowdry at Zouari Salon

The Process: I got my hair washed in the shower chair that has a massage chair, and got a head massage with the wash. Super relaxing! My hair was blow-dried followed by a curling iron.

Experience: I was taken care of by Rami and the rest of the team. I got asked if I wanted something to drink, and asked the Rami, my stylist for curls with volume and it’s exactly what I wanted. I just wish they had a wifi (which they didn’t have, even though it’s a hotel.)

Results: LOVED it. It was just as perfect the day after.

nickolwmakeupI recently dropped by for a make up session at Illumin8 studios for a one on one make up class and session with Nickol Walkemeyer for Savoirflair.com’s 3 ways to wear December shoot. I had my make up done by Nickol for a previous shoot with Grazia Magazine Middle East (& fell in love with my make up) so I was excited for a session as well as her tips. Here are some things I learnt…

www.illumin8makeupstudio.com

-Don’t go for a foundation darker. Use your skin tone, and then warm it up.

-Start with the cheeks first, then do everything else.

-Start bronzer at the back of your face, and work your way forward.

-Blend the edges when applying eyeshadow.

-Black is easy to add. Leave the black pencil and shadow till the end if you really need it.

MAC-Teddy-Eye-Kohl

- Nickol’s favourite brown pencil? MAC teddy.

-Nickol’s favorite nude? MAC myth or creme de nude.

-For the lips, tap the lipstick with your fingers to warm up the color.

I’m a Kevin Murphy convert. I’ve been hearing about the Australian haircare brand for some time but it’s only till I experienced the Kevin Murphy experience that I’ve realised I need it in my life. The products are sans Sulfates and Parabens, and even more importantly – Silicon (that drops your hair makes it stick to your head!). The products have skincare technology, that is used on the hair. Kevin believes that if it’s not good on your skin, then it isn’t good on your scalp either. I recently dropped by to Sera Beauty Lounge in Media City for a Kevin Murphy experience – a treatment to add moisture to my hair. Tea, my stylist added the treatment with a massage before putting it under the steamer, using the Luxury.Wash – an ultra rich shampoo for thick hair made out of Buriti Nut Oil, Vitamin A for super shiny hair and elasticity followed by the luxury.rinse. The KMX experience is just like a facial for the hair, as well as being quite relaxing and weightless on the hair. Here is a brief step by step of the KMX-

Step 1. Being exfoliation with maxi

Step2. Cleansing with the texture specific wash

Step3. Moisturizing the hair with texture specific rinse mixed with born again treatment.

Golf GTI (3)

VWCar: Volkswagen GTI Golf

I recently drove a Volkswagen GTI Golf for a weekend, and fell in love with the compact sportscar. I never found it the best looking car, but once I actually drove it and got to know it’s features – I started contemplating whether I should actually get the car. I drove a beautiful Tornado Red shade – their black shade looks very classy though! My Car & Drive highlights…

-The intense power of the car

-Sleek interiors

-High tech (Park Pilot, touch screen and Driver Alert system)

-Smooth drive

-Spacious with compartments for coffee cups and sunglass case & Comfortable seating for 4-5 pax

-Keyless entry

Riding School: Horse Riding Desert Palm

I used to horse ride when I was younger, and stopped after falling off a horse and hurting myself. After learning that Desert Palm (one of my favourite resorts here in Dubai) run horse riding classes, I had to get back into it. (PS they don’t do one off classes, you have to be coming in on a weekly basis.) I took my first 45 minute class with Mark, who was amazing at quickly running through the basics with thorough instruction. Two things that really impressed me and stood out for me was the cleanliness and professionalism of the equestrian centre. The folks there were completely professional in super chic gear, and the cleanliness of everything from the stables, to the riding hats. Also loved how the stirrups had grips on.

Accessories: Coquette

I’m not big on fine jewellery, and love my costume jewellery. You can add a statement necklace, a bunch of cocktail rings or fab earrings and give your look that finishing touch. I’ve recently been introduced to local label, Coquette – and been wearing their statement necklaces and bright earrings (which I barely wear, but I had to with those coquette neon ones.) They also make fun sweaters – check out the collection on their Facebook page.

manoushestreet

Take out: Man’oushe street

I love my manaeesh. I think I crave them at least once a week, and have fond memories of growing up in Dubai visiting Al Reef Bakery to pick up Manaeesh for the house. I’m so impressed with the modern take this city and other Arab countries have been giving Arabic Food. I recently learnt about Man’oushe Street, who just opened their fifth branch by Flywheel in Burj Views. The best part of it all is the fact that they also have Multi grain options for all of their Manaeesh, so you don’t feel guilty enjoying one after a workout. The restaurant is opened 24 hours, so also a great option after a night out. However, best of all – Other than their fab interiors and typography – is their actual manaeesh. Doughy, Delicious and Delightful. My favourites were the Feta Mix (Feta cheese with vegetables) followed by a Nutella & Halawe (deadly, so so good!). They also have other options of food such as wraps, pizza, and salads. Highly recommended.

goldsgym

Fitness: Gold’s Gym

I love Boutique fitness studios, but aware that it might not be everyone’s cup of tea. If you’re looking for gym chain options for machine workouts, Personal training and General Fitness classes – Gold’s Gym is one to check out. I recently booked in for a Personal training session at their Al Barsha Mall branch with Avantika Shah, one of their top Female trainers. My hour long training session took place at the mixed gym at Al Barsha Mall, and consisted of a 5 minute warm up on the treadmill followed by dynamic stretches (the cat and the camel) to workouts from the larger muscles to the smaller ones. Avantika mentioned that most of her clients come in to work different parts of the body during different sessions, but because I wasn’t a strength training regular, we did a full body workout. My session started with squats, lunges and leg curls t pull downs and push ups with machine workouts in between. One thing that I was impressed with was the cleanliness of the gym.

PS they have a mix of Female and mixed gyms so make sure to check them out.

SuperJuice-BeanMachine

Juice cleanse: The Bean Machine

New year, new changes. After a long and busy year, there’s nothing better than signing yourself up for a detox to say goodbye to the toxins in your body – which we get from the air and the processed foods we eat on a regular basis. Some people like doing juice cleanses to shed off the extra pounds, but I like adding some supplementary juices to my diet in order to feed myself the nutrients I need. I recently signed up for The Bean Machine’s 3 day juice program (they also have a 7 day and a 14 day one), which included two deliveries every day – the first one is in the morning followed by 2 juices dropped over in the afternoon. I liked the concept of two deliveries a day because of the fact that you were sure those juices were fresh as you drank them rather than bottled and sealed. The juices aren’t exactly as tasty as your juice bar drink but at least sacrificing the taste for the nutrients felt good enough. Please note I didn’t do the program by just having juices, I had them supplementary to my meals.

The cost of the 3 day program is AED180 and can be booked via duaa.anwar@bmcoffeeshops.com

My Beauty Routine by TV personality, Ereka Vetrini.

erekaErekabeautyroutine

American TV Personality (The Apprentice) and the Brand ambassador for beauty tech brand, TRIA was recently in Dubai promoting the brand. I had the chance to sit down with Ereka to talk about the brand, and her beauty routine.

www.triabeauty.com

Ereka… Tell me about TRIA.

You know, there are so many beauty services where you can spend so much money for so many years… like laser hair removal, age defying laser technology….TRIA has invented something amazing and has decided to give this power into your hands; for home use. Instead of making you pay for years and years for the same services. I feel passionate about the brand; I feel lucky to be associated with them and their products. And they all work – I’m not just saying that because I represent them!

Which one is your favorite?

I am Italian, so hair has always been an issue for me. You know when you get hair removal…

yes, it kills….

Yes; but you know it is working at least. With TRIA you have to do it regularly, every other day for three months to get permanent results. With this new device, which has just been updated, the treatment is even more effective.

Do you travel with it?

Always. Not when it is a night flight, but when I have a long flight yes. And this; is what is coming next….the Age Defying Laser. You know, I am 37, so I have wrinkles, age spots… So to use it you select a level and simply apply in different areas. You can treat more frequently with this one. Do it before going to bed because you will get some redness. People are familiar to Botox, injections, things like that; but this method is another way, without injection, to make your skin look much much better. It goes deep down to your dermis, you can feel it while working. Penetrating beams of light continuously rebuild collagen beneath your skin’s surface to make it look radiant and younger. No more age spots, wrinkles… it is unbeatable. When I joined the company they were talking about it and I was very excited by the idea. I talked about to all my friends but they were saying: ”Who is going to need that?”… but this is revolutionary is many ways. And people who need it, know about it. It is the same with Laser hair removal, and the Blue Light Therapy.

I know about Blue Light Therapy, I have read about it and it was quite popular in Dubai.

The reason why it is not effective at a dermatologist office is that bacteria comes back daily; so you need to do it frequently. And that’s why we have this new treatment now. It penetrates deep within the skin to eliminate acne causing bacteria at the source. We recommend to use it for a total of five minutes once daily or two minutes and a half twice a day, after you have washed your face. It is really soft and gentle, it is beautiful.

What are your favorite beauty products?

I am obsessed with shampoo. This one is PhilipB. The smell stays in your hair forever. This is the Oud Royal Conditioner. This is one of my favorite, the Forever Shine. I am a big beauty tools person because I have to get out of the door as quick as possible. Do you have CHI blow-dryers here?

No, we don’t, but I will check them out.

They are amazing! Make up for Ever is my foundation. I am usually living on camera world but I like to feel I don’t wear a mask when I am off & Make Up For Ever is for me the best. I have this little secret….you know, Jennifer Lopez has the same… It is a tiny head; you shine it down your nose and big cheeks. You can play with it, it can make your nose look thinner, it is amazing. It is from the net. I know this is discontinued but you can still get it on line on Stawberrynet.com for example.

What is always in your beauty bag?

I always carry a lip gloss, Chanel, number 15B.

What bronzer do you use?

I use one by Laura Geller. In TV we all use it. And I also use their highlighter which is really nice. And you know, at the moment I am obsessed by the hair Donut. It is genius! You can take it with you everywhere, even in a club. You just pull back, you stick this thing and you grab your hair on it and you have this amazing bun! The thicker and longer your hair is, the better it looks.

Do you take any vitamins supplements?

I do. I am a vegetarian so I take iron.

Do you try to eat clean?

Yes of course! I am a kind of freak about it. I think we always talk about dieting in the States; but I do not diet; I just eat right.

What is your fitness regimen?

I run a lot, I kick box.

Whenever I am in New York I try to go to Flywheel & Physique 57. I haven’t tried Barry’s Bootcamp yet but I have heard that it was very intensive.

You know about Barry’s? That is insane! I was just talking about it before you arrived! I haven’t gone either but I love when it is intense. Equinox is my gym.

Is there a facialist or dermatologist that you swear by?

You know, I don’t really get facials. I know I should but I use my Panasonic every day and my Blue Light. I never take those pills; antibiotics are not good in the long term.

What is your signature fragrance?

I don’t have one. When I wear one it is usually Amazing Grace by Philosophy, but you know I am always with my kids, and always in close contact with people. And especially in TV some people are weird about fragrance.

Brushes: Real Techniques

I find beauty products from experts are always going to be one of the best on the market. They’ve tried the good, the bad and the ugly so when they are creating their own product, they’re going to know what to go for and what to steer clear of. I recently started using brushes by Real Techniques, which have been created by Pro make up artist and Beauty Blogger, Samantha Chapman. There is a brush for everything to great travel kits (with brush cases) The quality is just insane, and the price points are great. I definitely recommend you check them out.

Real Techniques are distributed by Beautylicious.

Perfume: Dolce & Gabbana Eau de Parfum Pour Femme Intense

One of my favorite Dolce fragrances would have to be the maroon Dolce perfume. The brand have come out with a more intense version of the Eau de Parfum – intensified for those nights out. If you’re not familiar with the scent, it has high notes of White floral and citrus.

Range: Philosophy Total Matteness

If you have a problem with large pores and oily skin, this range by Philosophy is for you. It includes a pore-minimizing & mattifying cleanser + mask – which feels like a clay mask that deep cleans the face – whilst absorbing excess oil and minimizing shine and then applying the pore eraser after drying your cleansed skin for matte skin and less visible pores.

Brush: Chanel Pinceau Poudre brush

Brushes are investments, so make sure you find a good one when buying a new brush. I am currently loving the powder brush by Chanel – not only is the quality amazing, the brush is perfect for pressed & loose powders so you can have more control over blotting out where needed or as I love to use bronzers, I use it for my base blended bronzer on the face before adding my final swipe of bronzer.

Toner: L’Occitane Essential Water

I don’t really use toners, as I don’t feel like it makes an impact on my skincare routine. I have recently started using L’Occitane’s Essential water, which is an alcohol free toner, which consists of Floral water and green tea extracts. It really refreshes the face, and I like to apply it 10 minutes before starting with my make up.

Foundation: Bassam Fattouh basics foundation

I’ve become a huge fan of Bassam Fattouh make up. I’ve started using Bassam Fattouh’s Pret a Portea’s foundation for a night time coverage. It hydrates the skin, so it gives off a matte yet slightly dewy finish. I prefer to use it at night because it does feel quite heavy during the day, and got the foundation in the color BF04.

Illuminating powder: Dior Diorific Perfumed Illuminating powder

I love radiant skin, so I live for anything illuminating. I recently started using this brand new perfumed illuminating powder by Dior, which smells of J’adore and has bright pearl pigments all packed up into a luxurious gold box. Perfect to use this shimmering powder on the nose, brow bones and just above the lips.

Concealer: Sisley Paris Phyto Cernes Eclat eye concealer

If you’re one that doesn’t like applying anything heavy to the face or just looking for a light concealer for day to day – here it is… This Eclat eye concealer includes botanical extracts so it not only conceals – reduces puffiness, signs of fatigue and smoothes fine lines. The cooling metal tip is a great addition – helps puffiness and gives off a cooling pick me up effect.

Hair Spray: Show Premiere Finishing Spray

Let me be honest… I didn’t really expect much of Tamara Ecclestone’s beauty range except for luxe packaging but I must say I’m quite impressed. I’ve recently started using the Premiere Finishing spray which is a light yet buildable hair spray, it smells great, as well as has AC Kerazyme to protect the hair against thermal/heat, Pro-Vitamin B to repair the hair and Argan Oil to replenish and add moisture to the hair.

Available at Areej stores across the UAE

Eyeliner: Smashbox Always sharp

Self sharpened eyeliners are perfect for regular travellers (like me!), you don’t need to carry a sharpener and mess up your make up bag. When looking for an eyeliner, I like one that glides on easily, long lasting and gives a defined finish. I love this Waterproof kohl from Smashbox in their Raven shade (black). It also won an Allure award in 2013!

Prep spray: Urban Decay Vitamin-Infused Complexion Prep Spray

Something that I’ve learnt from make up artists over the past few years is the fact that the prep of the skin is more important than the actual make up. I’ve been using this one by Urban Decay – a vitamin infused spray to be used before the moisturiser and make up. The Vitamin B6 absorbs oil, reduced redness, and minimises pores allowing the skin to look it’s best and more radiant. Perfect to use before the make up or over the make up during the day to give the skin a refreshed boost.

Available at Sephora stores

Lipgloss: Bobbi Brown Pale Pink lipgloss

There are only a few lipgloss brands that I like using – Bobbi Brown is definitely one. I like the texture, the vanilla scent and the way it feels good on the lips due to the botanical extracts such as avocado and oils. It has the perfect amount of stickiness and gives a glossy finish. The Pale pink shade is the ultimate nude pink everyone should have in their beauty cupboard.

Eyeshadow Primer: Clinique All About Shadow Primer

I never knew how important an eyeshadow primer is… It’s not till you try it on your eyes for a few times and see what the difference it makes to your eye make up. Not only does it give you a better application, it also gives on a longer wear having that base to hold on to the eyeshadow. A few of the ones I’ve tried have a greasy finish, so this definitely gets extra points being a non greasy finish.

Sunscreen: Natura Bisse Intense Oil-free fluid

Don’t ever forget to wear sunscreen under your make up… your skin will thank you later. This month, I’ve been using this Intense Oil-free fluid from Barcelona based brand, Natura Bisse. The sunscreen which is light weight has an SPF of 30, is dry touch as well as being an anti-aging sunscreen. As it includes collagen and botanical extracts, it makes your skin look good too.

BB Cream: MAC Prep & Prime BB cream

Finding the right BB cream for you is just as important as finding the right foundation for you. I recently started using the MAC one from their Prep & Prime line. Light, feels good on the skin, moisturising with a decent amount of coverage. They just added a range of new shades, so this is definitely the one for you if you’re struggling to find your exact shade within BB creams.

CC Cream: Bourjois 123 Perfect CC cream

Moving on to the CC cream – colour correcting. I’ve been using this one by Bourjois under the foundation. The liquid, which has SPF 15 hydrates the skin and has 3 objectives for Anti Fatigue, Anti Redness and Anti Dark Spots. I felt like the formula made my skin look evenly, which required me to apply less foundation, and gave off a more even and dewy finish.

HAIR BOTOX 9-14-12

Photo: Salon on the yard

Tame your hair… with Hair Botox at The Dollhouse Dubai

After getting into the Keratin, Brazilian blowout sort of treatments, I’ve been addicted. Hair Botox is under that umbrella. I recently booked in for a Hair Botox appointment with Shilpa at The Dollhouse at Dubai Ladies Club (you can always count on great service from those ladies). Hair Botox is slightly more expensive than Keratin and the Brazilian blowouts because not only does it remove the frizz, it also restores lost proteins into the hair to leave it shiny, soft and manageable. The treatment starts off with a wash using the Hair Botox shampoo to remove the residue and making sure the hair is clear and clean before applying the Botox treatment – this also opens up the hair cuticles with the clarifying shampoo. The hair botox treatment is then applied (it has active ingredients to penetrate the hair cuticle) and left on the hair for 45 minutes. The hair was then washed with a mask to seal everything in as well as moisturise the hair and the scalp before being washed again, dried then run over with a straightener to seal the ingredients into the hair. Another thing I liked about the treatment is the fact that it didn’t burn my eyes or skin, just felt slightly itchy when it was on my hair. I was very happy with the results, which stays for around 2-4 months – the only downfall is the fact that it removes hair colour when it opens up the cuticles so if you have done hair colour, speak to the stylist before as it might not be the perfect treatment for you.

Biolite_ph210420135806

Get Red Carpet ready… with a Red Carpet facial at Biolite.

As mentioned previously, you get facials for deep cleaning or ones that give off instant effect. The Red Carpet facial is for that instant effect and glow. Perfect if you have a big event… Book yourself for a morning Red Carpet Facial at Biolite before your hair and make up appointments. I’ve been to Biolite a few years ago, and so excited that they opened up a Jumeirah branch. Not only is it much closer to where I live, it’s super relaxing, quiet and feels cosy – the perfect atmosphere to get your treatments in. The facial consisted of a cleansing session, exfoliation followed by an oxygen facial as well as radio therapy.  The Oxygen facial is used to rejuvenate and add lost oxygen and energy back into your skin and the serums are packed with active ingredients which gives you immediate results – from brightened skin to a deep cleanse that removes pollution and dust from the skin (which we get a lot in Dubai.). The Radio Frequency part of the facial heats the deep layer of your skin without damaging the top layer. That heat  causes the collagen in our skin to contract and tighten. This treats sagging jaw lines, loose skin and dark circles. My skin ended up feeling brightened, soft and refreshed. I also love how they apply mineral make up right after so you don’t look completely barefaced if you have an appointment/meeting right after!

Relax… with a Yhi Abhyanga massage at Yhi Spa, Melia Hotel

I recently booked in for an 80 minute aromatherapy massage – The Yhi Abhyanga massage at Yhi Spa at the Melia Hotel. I actually didn’t know about the hotel but found out it’s a hidden gem in Bur Dubai. Being a person that has the worst sense of direction, I thought I was going to struggle finding the hotel but I pretty much got there via Al Wasl Road. The hotel is a chic boutique one, with modern interiors. If there’s one thing I love treating myself to… it’s an Aromatherapy massage and this has to be at the top of my list. Using Almond oil (one of my favourites), it was an 80 minute deep rhythmic massage using warm essential oils (primarily Almond) in a relaxing & rejuvenating way to eliminate inert energy as well as activating our ‘PRANA’ (life force) to the stimulate our body’s vital energy.

Give your hair a spa treatment… with a Caviar hair treatment at Purity Medical Spa, Dubai.

Al Wasl road is filled with beauty salons and spas, but it’s easy being lost in a dilemma when choosing the right one because I’ve been to amazing ones, good ones, bad and just plain ugly. I recently headed to Purity Med spa, who just had a revamp – they have treatments like Laser hair removal, medical facials to a hair salon under one roof. After a busy DIFF and festive season, my hair needed major SOS and so I booked myself in for a Caviar Hair treatment by Alterna hair care (the brand that Katie Holmes fronts). Convinient location, I was excited to check out the spa (which by the way is beautiful and super professional with SMS reminders). My treatment started with a shower (they have SUPER comfortable shower chairs, feels like a sofa, extra points!) and had my hair washed with the Caviar shampoo, conditioner then had the Caviar clinical hair mask put into my hair with a relaxing 10 minute massage. I was then moved to my chair, with a steamer to let my hair take in the product (which has limited chemicals, and completely natural). After being left under the steamer for some time, I was moved back to the shower to get it washed out. (I must say some steamers really make your hair feel like it’s on fire, but this one was comfortable.) My hair felt incredibly soft and smelt amazing – this is perfect for damaged hair or just a pick me up because of the pollution our hair goes through within chemicals and environmental. Just make sure to get it done during the week as it’s best to not style your hair post treatment and let it rest.

Promote positivity… with a Colour Therapy session at SpaDunya Club, Dubai.

I’ve been hearing about SpaDunya for some time – they have also won the best day spa award (they have face, hair, and body treatments including make up) so I booked in for The Gloom buster, coincidently on a gloomy day in Dubai. I’ve never tried Colour therapy before and was eager to check it out. The Gloom buster is a series of 3 wellness massages that you buy as a package of AED785 – they include massage treatments using Orange, Gold and Green colours to help create a shift in mind, promote happiness, energise you and allow you to recharge. My treatment started off with a foot ritual with pure himalayan salt whilst filling out my consultation form, the colour consultation then took place where I chose three colours that stood out for me – my therapist sprayed it on to my hands, whilst I let myself smell the aura before starting the treatment. I was then shown to the changing rooms, before heading to my treatment room laying on a heated bed for a 60 minutes full body massage. Not only did it help the tension I had within the muscles, the Altearah Bio perfumes really uplifted my mood and definitely gave my body the push I needed for the week.

Machinepedicure

Get an effective pedicure… with a Machine Pedicue at Galina’s Beauty Salon

I tend to get manicures once a week or once every 10 days as I use my hands regularly, and they dry up which makes them ready for the next manicure quickly. However with a really good pedicure, I’ve realised it can go a long way. Finding an effective pedicure is vital, gives you great looking & healthy feet whilst saving you time (even though you can always get work done whilst getting a pedicure!). I recently booked in for a Machine Pedicure at Galinas Beauty Salon in Al Barsha. The owner has trained staff from the largest Nail bars here in Dubai, even though the salon is hidden and tiny in the midst of Al Barsha. The Anti-bacterial and Anti-fungal treatment includes products by German brand, Balsan and is mainly a dry pedicure however in Dubai, due to it being a muslim country – they wash the feet with water after doing the work. The treatment starts with a Balsan Lotion to soften cuticles, nails and removal of hard callus – it slightly burnt my feet but it made me realise that it’s working to remove the stubborn callus. The dry skin was then removed with a spatula (formally called Anatomical Callus tool) and drillers (No pain whatsoever). After all the work was done and my feet felt like a baby’s, a Balsan creme balance was applied to the sole – it’s a non grease, powder effect cream – before going into the nail colour. I was super impressed with the treatment… yes it takes longer and more expensive than your typical pedicure – but it’s more effective and you get longer lasting soft & healthy feet. As the products don’t have acids, and just alkali – it’s safe for home use as well. The only pointer I have was my toe nails were stained from the liquids used.

We’re back with the next Hair Tutorial in collaboration with Eideal Online. This month, I’ve gone back to the basics to show you how to get the perfect blow dry (couldn’t resist not doing a Festive hairstyle for December though!). Check out the step by step guide (visuals above, and text below) on how to get that sleek blow out.

There’s no better feeling than facing the world knowing your hair looks fabulous thanks to the wonders of an expert blowdry, but with today’s hectic lifestyle a morning in the salon is often impractical. Although it might seem like one of the more basic steps in a not-so-basic beauty routine, an at-home blowdry that yields a professional finish can be a daunting task, especially for those with thick or wavy hair. So to help you have fabulous hair without venturing outside your home, I have created your step-by-step guide to help you master the basic blowdry!

Concept:

A basic step-by-step blowdry guide that will form the basis for more advanced hair tutorials.

What you will need to complete the look:

Hairdryer with nozzle attachment

Tail comb

Leave-in conditioner

Argan oil serum

Paddle brush

Medium ceramic round barreled brush

Sectioning clips

Step 1 (The correct shampooing procedure)

A bouncy blowdry begins with a clean mane! Ensure your hair is squeaky clean by shampooing twice. Focus on the roots and scalp, the shampoo will work its way down the rest of the hair and clean it automatically. I recommend using a high-quality, sulfate-free shampoo to maintain the hairs’ natural oils and shine. After rinsing out the shampoo, condition it. I distribute the product between the mid-sections and the ends, making sure I avoid the scalp as this can add extra weight to the hair and give a nasty, oily effect! I pay extra attention to the dry/damaged areas as they need a little extra nourishment!

Step 2 (Product preparation)

At this point my hair is clean and ready to go. Working with wet hair, I take a small amount of leave-in conditioner and gently rub it into the ends. This protects my hair from the brushing and heat, as well as loosening up any stray tangles I might have. I then detangle with my paddle brush – this prevents breakage and damage when we start to blowdry.

Tip: A good hairstyle requires good tools so it is important to work with a high-quality brush and dryer! Curly and frizzy haired girls will require a round brush with strong bristles to achieve tension when it is pulled through the hair. Brushes with a larger diameter will achieve a straighter effect whereas smaller diameter barrels will create a more curly/voluminous look. If you’re looking for a super-straight effect I recommend working with a paddle brush.

Step 3 (Taming the texture)

Now we move on to the fun part! It is important to begin with the most curly/resistant part of the hair, for many, this is the bangs/fringe. Starting with this unruly section gives you greater control and leaves your bangs looking smooth and polished.

Tip: Make sure the roots are still really wet at this point; this will help the bangs to lay flat.

First I section-off the front of my hair using a tail comb and clip/tie the rest out of the way. Then, using the nozzle on the end of the hairdryer, I ensure the airflow is facing downwards and stretch my bangs from left to right – this ensures that I have control over where the part falls. The nozzle should follow the direction of the brush working downwards from the roots.
Step 4 (Rough dry & protect)

Now that my bangs have been tamed it’s time to move on to the rest of my mane. I let my hair completely down and use the dryer to remove some of the excess moisture. It is important to keep the dryer moving as this prevents the hair from becoming ‘patchy’. I then apply a small amount of my Argan Oil Serum to the middle and ends of my hair to smooth and protect. For better results I apply the serum after rough drying as the cuticle is open at this stage so the product is easily absorbed.

Step 5 (Section and dry – back)

Next I section my hair and, starting with the under layer at the back, begin to dry. I use my round brush to create tension and concentrate the airflow down the cuticle to smooth the hair. I only move on to a new section once I know that the roots are completely dry as they are the key to a long-lasting style. If you’re in need of a volume boost you can work with a volumizing product and hold the round brush, with the hair wrapped around, at the roots for a few moments whilst the hair cools. To really set the style I use the cool shot button on the dryer. For convenience I group the sections together as I dry, working my way up from the nape of the neck to the crown.

Step 6 (Section and dry – front)

Now I’m ready to start work on the sides. I create sections on the left and right sides and repeat the drying process I used at the back. It is important to distribute the hair evenly across the brush and maintain an even amount of tension.

Step 7 (Finishing touches)

To complete my blowdry I add a blast of cold air, this closes the cuticles and sets the style in place. For that on-trend ‘lived-in’ look I flip my hair over, remove the nozzle from the dryer and blast my hair – this creates definition.

Tip: To revive your blowdry the next day, take sections of your hair from the root then wrap them around the barrel of your round brush and roll up to the scalp. Hold your hair in place for a few seconds a give it a quick cold blast with the hair dryer to set in the volume. If your roots tend to be oily, rub some dry shampoo into them – this prolongs the life of your blowdry and adds volume to flat hair.

Basma-revlon

I worked with Basma a few years ago when I started my blog and she changed careers to Make up Artistry – she has really built a name for herself in the beauty industry and is also Revlon’s Ambassador here in the region. Basma recently came over to show me some of her beauty secrets as well as giving me a light make up look that looked super fresh and warm.

-Drink coconut water everyday to keep hydrated – Once you’re hydrated, your skin looks a lot better.

-Start with a primer – Check out Revlon’s Photoready Perfecting Primer. Apply on the T-zone, Higher Cheekbones – anywhere it gets oily.

-For foundation, start from the centre then go out. Check out Revlon’s Nearly Naked (invisible foundation) – Push/blend the foundation into your hairline which most people forget.

-For Concealer, go for something 1-2 shades lighter. Draw it like a V under the eyes to give your face a lifted look.

-Apply product to your hand first then use a brush for the natural body heat to heat up the product.

-Love a Brown Smokey eye? Check out Revlon’s Colorstay in Adventurous.

-If you love radiant skin, Buy yourself Revlon Skinlights (I’m obsessed!) – Use the lighter as an illuminator with a brush on higher cheeks, nose and cupids bow & use the darker for contouring.

-Perfect nude: lip butter Revlon in creme brulee.

The lipsticks are made out of Cocoa butter, shea butter and mango butter.

Salon Choice: Loft Fifth Avenue Salon, Dubai

_PPP2030fin PPP_3638finloftfifthhair

When I signed on with Pantene for their campaign last year, I had to go back to my natural hair colour (a deep dark brown) and that forced me to stay with my natural shade for a good six months. I must say this was good because it made me appreciate my natural hair colour (which I never had the chance to because I was constantly colouring it… and it also made my hair much healthier!). Being the person that I am, I got slightly bored and decided to go ombre at Loft Fifth Salon – their stylists are specialised in colour. I was super impressed with the salon and service. Here’s my breakdown.

Where: Loft Fith Avenue Salon, The Dubai Mall

The Salon: Slick & cool… feels like I’m in a loft in New York City.

Service: Whether it was the manager, my stylist or the assistants – everyone was super helpful and sweet.

Hair brands: They use a range of different brands from Kerastase (styling), Redken (Hair treatments) to L’oreal (hair colour)

Chairs & Shower beds: The chairs are leather & luxe, comfortable too. The shower beds reclined but slightly felt uncomfortable by the neck (or maybe I’m a bit too spoilt with the new flat beds!)

Entertainment: They have a range of the latest magazines, which is always a plus when you’re getting blow dried and even more so, getting your hair colored/getting a hair treatment. They also have a range of drinks for refreshments.

Wi-Fi: They have internet, but it’s quite low… which was a struggle getting work done. Let’s blame that on The Dubai Mall though :)

Atmosphere: Amazingly, on a weekday morning – it was packed! However, you still had your privacy… I was able to work on the computer, read magazines, and have my own time.

What else is on the menu: 30 minute teeth whitening, Redken chemistry hair treatments, blow outs & cuts, mani/pedi, waxing, make up, and facials. All-in-One – Must come back and try their treatments, stay tuned!

The process: My session began after meeting  with my colourist, Adriana where she checked the condition of my hair as well as getting an idea of my colour now and where I wanted to go – she advised me on what would be best for my hair as well as mentioning other trends women are currently doing with Ombre. The results were too subtle, that it turned out to be an ombre of light brown (a bit too careful with the hair, but I wanted my ombre!) – the staff didn’t want me to leave unhappy so I was booked in for another appointment with the Color technical director, Romy, who is their most senior stylist and is Australian Lebanese. After talking through the perfect colour, and going for the second colouring. I got my hair re-colored. The subtle blonde was highlighted in a paint brush effect – made famous by the colourist to the stars. To make sure my hair was nourished and hydrated, After colouring, L’oreal Clear was applied on the hair, a clear gloss that lasts for 3 weeks, Cat protein spray, Redken’s Chemistry treatment to help extend the colour and strengthen.

Results: After a total of 7 hours, I finished off with a natural, subtle blonde color – more of end highlights rather than an Ombre. Perfect as a starting point for someone who has dark hair… Baby steps are a must and if you want to go lighter, come in to lighten the strands a month later. Thank you Romy!

Cost:

Hair Treatment: 160dhs

Ombre : 550dhs.

How does a laser work to remove hair?

$

rebeccatrestonandtalasammanFor skin, I swear by Rebecca Treston at Euromed clinic. She’s the hidden gem that Dubaiians swear by as she’s been working here at different clinics for some time. I love the fact that Rebecca comes up with bespoke tailor-made treatments to help out with skin issues you come. I decided to come up with a new feature where I’ll be asking Rebecca a question once a month and this month I decided to ask about Laser hair removal – something I personally swear by – once you start getting it done, there’s no way you’ll go back to waxing. I asked Rebecca how laser works to remove hair and how many times we should be doing it to see results. If you have a question you’d like for me to ask Rebecca, tweet it to @myfashdiary or write it in the comment box below.

At the clinic we use the Cynosure elite laser system, which offers two wavelengths – the 755-nm Alexandrite laser and the 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser – in one laser system which means I can treat a wide variety of patients with different skin type and skin tones. The Alexandrite offers fantastic results for permanent hair reduction for light skin types; while the high-powered 1064-nm Nd:YAG is the safest wavelength for permanent hair reduction on darker skin types and tanned skin. As an added bonus, the inclusion of the SmartCool system ensures the ultimate patient comfort.

All KHR (LHR) works in the same manner – that is that the laser causes localized damage by selectively heating dark target matter, melanin, in the area that causes hair growth, the follicle, while not heating the rest of the skin. Hair grows in several phases (anagen, telogen, catagen) and a laser can only affect the currently active growing hair follicles (early anagen). Hence, several sessions are needed to kill hair in all phases of growth.Multiple treatments depending on the type of hair and skin colour have been shown to provide long-term reduction of hair. Most patients need a minimum of six treatments.
