Myfashdiary experiences… Brazilian Keratin at Hairworks, Dubai.

Let me start off by saying, Thank god for Keratin. But, that doesn’t mean Keratin can be done anywhere, nor is it great everywhere. I’m a person that likes to try out different salons but when I’m sold, I’m sold. I recently headed over to Hairworks in Spinneys Umm Suqueim as it is pretty much next door to where I live. One major tip – Book in advance! Booking was slightly difficult, as they are always super booked.

Upon arriving, The Hairworks ladies were super sweet and helpful – they explained more about the Keratin that I was doing.  (Slightly wished the Chairs could have been comfier… or I might just be picky) On to the actual Keratin, The treatment that was used was called QOD Brazilian Keratin. My hair was washed once I arrived, followed by a light blowdry before applying the treatment on the hair. My hair was then covered with a plastic film over the solution in order for it to get dried within the hair, my hair was then straightened with the Keratin in my hair. I was asked to lay off washing my hair till the next morning in order for the Brazilian Keratin to absorb within the hair.

Once I took a shower the next day, in less than 24 hours – I instantly felt my hair was much softer, and not as prone to frizz. Really happy with the outcome, I’ll definitely come back and do this again in a few months. If you’re looking for great Keratin in Dubai, this is  definitely highly recommended!

UPDATED WINNER – COMPETITION: Make up lesson with Celebrity Make-up artist, Sophie Hendra!

CONGRATS TO WINNER SHAUNA CASSIDY!

As I know a lot of you are beauty mavens, this week I’m giving away a make up lesson and consultation with Celebrity make up artist (check her work on Mischa Barton above), Sophie Hendra! Sophie has worked with high profile clients, large events and magazines in the Middle East and Europe.  She is also one of the only artists in the region to offer professional airbrushing! Sophie is one of the key exhibitors at the Beyond Beauty Arabia event if you’ll be popping down!

How to win the session:

-Like Sophie Hendra’s page on facebook

-Like Myfashdiary on facebook

-Confirm the above in the comment box below.

Sophie is one of the first artists in this region to use a professional compressor and airbrush gun to apply make-up. By using an airbrush, the micronized make-up is dispersed so finely over primed skin that it can barely be seen. It rests on the surface of the skin so is not rubbed in (which can often exaggerate the pores with conventional makeup application). The micro mist of makeup fills pores and fine lines thus creating the flawless finish that you see on today’s celebrities. The process is hygienic and allows the skin to breathe but also conceals the skin properly.

Airbrush makeup is water resistant so tears or perspiration don’t cause a problem, you can simply blot away any moisture leaving the makeup in place perfectly. Another huge benefit is that the makeup really lasts, with over 12 hours of wear, airbrush makeup won’t rub off on clothing or fade away but is easily removed at the end of the event and gentle on the skin.

Once Sophie sprays the airbrush makeup on to her clients it dries instantly and doesn’t need re-applying. Another benefit is that it can also cover birthmarks, scars and tattoos. Airbrushing is a quick process, taking just a couple of minutes to spray on.

Myfashdiary experiences… the Kalm Facial.

I recently headed over to the Kalm spa on a Saturday afternoon, on the palm within Riva beach club. They have a range of holistic services including hair, nails and spa treatments but for this appointment, I went ahead with their facial. After arriving, I was asked to follow my therapist – The Facial took place in a kalm room with soft music in the background. After laying down on the snug massage bed, I was introduced to the treatment… There was deep cleansing, extraction as well as a holistic and relaxing finish, which was the massage.

The treatment started with a cleanser and toner, to make sure my skin was cleansed before going deeper into the skin. This, then lead to the extraction process, which included a steam head to open up my pores as well as a high frequency machine to remove the bacteria, excess oils and impurities. After extracting, my skin was treated to an antioxidant mask, whilst my therapist massaged my chest, neck and head. Bliss way to end the weekend. All the products were natural, and sourced by the lovely owners from Thailand

Myfashdiary experiences… Haute Manicure @ The Nail Spa, Dubai.

Dubai is known for their extensive lists of fab nail salon around the city. I have a handful of places I consider my ultimate favorites… and The Nail Spa is one of them. I tend to visit the Mercato branch (the busiest one out of all, so do check out the other branches) This time, instead of getting an actually manicure and color done, I went over to try out their Haute Manicure, which they launched for their tenth anniversary. This Haute/Luxe manicure is a superb treat for the nails – we are constantly covering them up with nail colors that dehydrate them and cause them to discolor.

The process is similar to a regular manicure but also includes a hand soak in hot sweet almond oil (bliss!) as well as an oil hand massage. Not only do you feel like you can leave with perfect & prim nails, your hands end up feeling moisturized and pampered. The therapist recommended that I don’t end up topping my nails with a color as the whole point of the treatment is to let the oil absorb naturally, as well as the fact that the oils might chip the nails within a day or two.

Myfashdiary experiences… the NEOM treatment @ Raffles Spa, Dubai.

I love spas and always love checking out different spas around the world. In Dubai, I tend to stick to Sensasia, and realized it was high time I start checking out other spas and hotel spas around town (I mean, we do have the best hotels in the city.) I recently visited the Raffles spa – which was beautiful. There is nothing more relaxing than feeling you’ve entered an island far away after putting foot into a wellness spa. The service was excellent, and I made my way to my massage therapist, Kadick who took me to my room – which included a changing room within.

The treatment I experienced was their only Lavendar Neom treatment at the spa. I have been a fan of Neom for a year now – I love the fact that every product is organic, and they smell lovely. A personal fan of their pillow sprays and hand creams.

The treatment started off with a footpath in warm water, which kicked off the atmosphere. I was then asked to lay down for my full body scrub. Exfoliations within treatments are always a favorite because the mixture is natural, and quite raw – you end up leaving with super soft, yet heavily moisturized skin. After wiping off the scrub paste with a hot towel, we moved on to the full body and head massage, which was much needed and heavenly.

To get back into reality, I was offered ginger tea before making my way out…

The Raffles Lavender Indulgence treatment has actually been created especially for Raffles 125th Anniversary. Travellers in the 19th century would have been familiar with lavender’s healing, antiseptic and relaxing qualities; and that’s why we choose NEOM luxury lavender oil for this treatment.

Perfume: New j’adore dior absolu
I loved Dior’s J’adore, but this fragrance is on another level.

Serum: Nuxe Nuxellence Jeunesse youth and radiance fluid
This is the first serum I have started using religiously, and I love it. Not only does it smell amazing, I feel like my skin has been looking a lot brighter these days. This product is the first floral battery that repairs mitochondrial DNA to recharge the skin with youth and radiance.

Body: Sephora Vanilla
obsessed with their body scrubs, bath gels, lotions and soap in the vanilla scent. Not too sweet, but perfect for a vanilla lover.

Foundation: Guerlain Parure De Lumiere
I’m a huge fan of Guerlain’s bronzers but never really tried most of their other products. I recently tried this new foundation, which has great coverage, SPF 20, and a sheer satin finish. Not too heavy on the skin either, love.

Bath:  Philosophy White Cherry Shampoo, shower gel and bubble bath
Even though this would make the perfect christmas present, and christmas has passed… I couldn’t resist not featuring the product. Not only does this smell like yummy cherries, and has a gift looking packaging, the gel gives off a Hologram effect, and looks SO cool. so much fun.

Concealer: Diorskin concealer
I must say… Another underrated beauty brand that I’m currently obsessed with is Dior beauty. In love with their skin care AND cosmetics. I am currently obsessed with their concealer – which is a skin perfecting hydrating concealer – which has great coverage, doesn’t crease, isn’t too heavy and brightens up the skin.

Hair: Kerastase Initialiste
Kerastase is definitely one of my favorite hair brands…. I was one of the few people in the Middle East to try their new Initialiste advanced scalp and hair concentrate that  you leave in on the hair to add substance, resistance and shine. It smells great, and it definitely gives my hair some life and shine. I have only started using it, but already obsessed.

Scrub: REN Skincare Moroccan Rose Otto Sugar body Polish
I was recently introduced to the brand by N Bar in Dubai & I am obsessed. Not greasy, smells so fresh and leaves my skin feeling super soft. Hands down… one of the best scrubs! PS no Parabens or sulphate.
Available at NBar, Dubai

Bronzer: Too faced chocolate Soleil bronzer
Smells like chocolate (even better, actually.), gives off a great matte bronze and blends in perfectly. Obsession.
Available exclusively at Sephora stores.

Lips: Lancome in love Baume in 110 Urban Ballet
Firstly, I must say – I am in love with the packaging of Lancome’s in love collection. The orange/pinks and brights makes me think of Spring… My favorite piece from the whole collection would have to be the Baume, which gives off a transparent (tiny tint) kind of color with a ton of hydration. It looks like a lipstick, and perfect to carry around to keep your lips hydrated. yes.

Boutique: Backstage boutique, Village Mall
I recently discovered a Beauty boutique at The Village Mall who stock a ton of amazing niche beauty brands – within fragrance, hair, skincare and cosmetics. They also stock one of my favorite Australian beauty brands, Becca!

My Elemis Skin Lab Experience.

I recently popped over to the Elemis counter at Bloomingdales to try out their skin lab (which everyone can do, by the way!) After putting my face into the little box and in less than a minute, the monitor shows everything happening beneath the surface of the skin. I e. Fine wrinkles, blocked pores, bacteria underneath the skin, UV damage etc. This was definitely an eye opener on what products I need to introduce to my skin care regimen, or which I need to use more frequently. After the session, I received a report on all the details to keep.

Followed by the skin lab, I treated myself to one of their Expert touch facials, which is a mini facial that costs 120 AED. I went with De-Stress & Rebalance as my skin was a little stressed on that week, which remineralises and renews tired overworked skin. The treatment included hot stones, ginseng toning, a papaya face mask and a massage – bliss.

After my day with Elemis, not only did my skin feel refreshed & ‘alive’ from the fab treatment with Elemis senior trainer, Emma – I left with more motivation to take care of my skin this 2013. Stay tuned to see which Elemis products I’m loving in my Beauty Buzz features this year.

Myfashdiary does… Metallic Ombre nails!

I love nail art and putting on interesting designs on my nails. I recently visited one of my all time favorite nail salon in Dubai – N Bar to get some metallic nails done. I went for a purple metallic from Essie’s mirror collection, but had a bit of fun with my hands. I went for Metallic Ombre nails – so chic. My lovely therapist, Grace used three metallic shades (silver, gold, and copper) and used a sponge to apply it on. The sponge did make me think it was going to be one messy manicure – Luckily, they were super neat and dried quickly. Check them out above!

If you have any suggestions for nail art to try, buzz them over in the comment box below.

My Bastien Beauty Experience.

I have been hearing about the Bastien pedicure, and that once I try it… I’ll never go back.

So, Naturally… I had to try it out. The Bastien Manicure & Pedicure was developed by Bastien Gonzalez and is available at several one & only spas  around the world. I booked myself in for an appointment at the Atlantis spa. As soon as I made my way to the ShuiQi spa, I was welcomed by my therapists, Clement and Trishna – both who were trained by Bastien. I was led to my own room with the comfiest chair bed, and a water like pillow (bliss!).

The interesting thing with Bastien’s concept is the fact that no water is used, and there are only a few simple products, yet super effective. Rather than cutting or pushing down my cuticles, a light drill was used to remove the dead skin around my nails – wish salons would start doing this… My skin around my nails usually turn pick after a session of excess cuticle cutting, this time they didn’t even change in color, and I didn’t feel an inch of discomfort. Once that was done, a mask was applied on my nails which included Vitamin E and Chamomile to hydrate my nails. To make sure they were soft too, a gentle exfoliator with crushed pearls was applied and rubbed on. A buffer was used in between the steps to build a strong shine on my nails.

Done with the nails and off to the skin. Rather than using a scrub, a blade was used for the dead skin on the heels and bottom of the feet (this didn’t hurt at all) I was shocked how it completely removed all the excess hard skin that actually continue building and makes wearing heels uncomfortable. Once that was over, the lights were dimmed and I was given a feet and hand massage (best, best part!).

Bastien’s belief is that nail polish is make up, and should be removed after an event etc. They recommend that you don’t get any polish put on your nails. I decided to keep my hands polish free and add a nude tone to my feet (they have Ciate & Essie nailpolish at the Atlantis Spa) It has been a few days since my Bastien treatment and my nails are still shiny.

I am a Bastien convert.

Myfashdiary experiences… a Sports Massage @ The Cure, Dubai.

As a girl who loves massages, and works out 5-7 times a week – I can’t believe I’ve never tried out a Sports massage. I recently booked myself in to try it out at The Cure in Media City (Building 10, BBC building) They literally have every beauty treatment available, perfect for anyone that works or lives around that area. My therapist, Flora took me in as soon as I came – no fuss, straight into the massage room. Beauty salons don’t usually have ‘pretty’ massage rooms, but this one was great. I never really knew the difference between a sports massage and a classic Swedish one – they do have similarities, in terms of kneading pressures but the Sports massage has a deeper and stronger pressure, as well as deep stretching, which is great for someone who works out a lot. The treatment was 90 mins – the muscles I worked out the day before (calves and triceps) killed, but they ended up feeling less stiffer post treatment. Also, for someone that sits on a computer for long hours, works out, travels a ton – my shoulders and back are always quite stiff, and a swedish pressure isn’t always enough. I left the salon relaxed and ready for the week ahead. www.thecure.ae

My Caviar Hair Experience.

I recently popped over to the Frank Provost salon at Mall of the emirates for a hair treatment. The salon was quite easy to get an appointment at, which is always good for last minute plans… After the head hairdresser checked the condition of my hair, he explained that my ends were quite dry, and we were going to go ahead with a Kerastase treatment to give the hair that extra moisture. The Kerastase room was full that day, so I had my treatment done by the basins (but you do usually get the Kerastase room for your comfort!). After washing my hair, a small box of caviar was unsealed mixed with a Kerastase conditioner base, before applying it on all my hair. I then had my hair wrapped up in a foil in order for the treatment to get absorbed within my hair. Ten minutes later, my hair was washed off with a massage and finished off with a fab blowdry.

You might want to know more about the Caviar hair treatment… It is the finest treatment by the Kerastase brand (my favorite for hair treatments) and the luxurious mix is used on the hair to hydrate the scalp, soften the hair and finish it off with a fab shine. My hair was super soft after my first shower after the treatment and I will have to start doing the treatment on a monthly basis…

A New Year, A New You.

Even though we are already at February, I just got back from my trip to New York & London (where I got ill twice) and realized I needed a little break to re-energize and revitalize so here is a little guide on some great treatments to try around town…

-A Detox Massage at The Nail Spa, Dubai.

The Nail Spa has always been one of my favorite nail salons in Dubai, but as their rooms are hidden behind – I never really knew about all the other facial/body treatments they offered. I recently popped by to the salon to try out their Detox massage.

Listed down as the Detox massage, The massage was a low pressure 60 minute full body massage. If you’re one that loves a full on high pressure massage on the muscles, this is not for you but if you’re looking for a relaxing tension breaker, do check it out.

The Nail Spa, Dubai.

-Kerastase treatment at Pastels Salon, Dubai

I recently visited Pastels Salon for the first time. I always spot the salon when I’m on Al Wasl road, but  never got the chance to check it out. As a Jumeirah gal, the first thing that won my heart was was the location. Even though I ran a bit late, the staff were super sweet and accommodating. I came in for a Kerastase treatment followed by a blowdry (a huge fan of Kerastase products, so I was excited to try out a treatment of theirs.  After meeting the owner of the salon, I received a mini consultation where she recommended a treatment that was going to moisturize as well as revive my hair color.

Now I must say, if you were to get any treatment done, it would have to be Pastels Salon, they have the BEST shower basins where they turn into flat beds, and are from Singapore. I could have passed out on the bed – as good as a massage. Not only was I super relaxed from the beds, I left with soft and bouncy hair for New Years Eve!

Pastels Salon, Dubai.

-The Sisters Massage at Sisters beauty lounge, Dubai

The Sisters beauty lounge, Dubai Mall branch is home to great body treatments. I recently tried their signature massage, which is a Swedish massage base using a light almond oil (my favorite!). A great full body massage, and I ended up getting all my muscles stretched out & felt  revived enough to start the new year!

-Loreal treatment at Hairworks, Beach Road in Dubai

I recently popped over to try out Hairworks on beach road for their best conditioning treatment (according to head stylist Lulu!) The treatment I experienced was the Loreal Cataplasme – which is the mixing of creams with fig and Ginseng extracts (yum.). The two-step treatment transforms the texture of the hair, and deep conditions. It lasts for ten washes and nourishes the hair. I had my hair washed before adding the treatment to my hair followed by scalp massages (my favorite…). After around half an hour of the treatment in the hair, it was washed through and finished it off with a blowdry. My hair not only felt super bouncy and silky… it smelt so good.

-Detox Delight cleanse

Cleansing your insides and detoxing is just as important. Personally, I am not the biggest juice cleanse fan (I need solids.. and coffee) but if you’re brave enough, Detox Delight is a great company that delivers juices with all the right nutrients . You have the choice of doing it for several days or more, and the choice of going with a juice cleanse or a soup & juice one instead. I recently tried the detox for a day – the juices are fab. My favorite would have to be the Lemonade.
You can head to Lafayette gourmet or check out their site here

BEAUTY BUZZ: February 2013

Perfume: Michael Kors woman
The fragrance I’m using this month. I love anything Gardenia, and even though this is not a new fragrance, it’s one of those I like bringing back every 2 years.

Brushes: Dior brushes
I’ve only really used MAC brushes but I’ve recently been using Dior ones…. who ever knew Dior brushes were so great? The quality is just divine and I’m a huge fan of the powder and fluid foundation brush.

Lotion: Sephora body lotion in Chic Guimauve
I am a fan of  Sephora lotions, and for the holiday season this year, they gave out with a holiday scent that smelt like candies (smells so good and sweet, but isn’t too sweet to give you headaches). They are bottled in chic limited edition monochrome prints. Sephora, how about you make this part of your permanent collection?

Foundation: Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua hydrating cream compact
I’m not usually a fan of cream based foundations but this one is just great – great coverage, doesn’t oil up the skin yet my skin looks extremely hydrated once I put it on. It also has  SPF 15 within. I love it in the 40 Beige shade!

Body: Vaseline Total moisture creams
A drug store product I love… Vaseline’s Total moisture lotions are just fab – they keep my skin super moisturized, they smell so good and they are just as good as luxury creams… except you spend less :) My favorites would have to be the Cocoa Glow – yummy!

Teeth: Yumaki toothbrush
Minimal toothbrush from Vietnam, super chic – one to introduce to your toothbrush cup! For more, check out their site here

Sunscreen: Elemis Liquid Layer SPF 30
I’ve been looking for a great sunscreen for some time and as a huge fan of Elemis Skincare products, I thought I would give their liquid layer one a try. With SPF 30, and a light liquid base – this one glided well and was absorbed quickly once applying on the page. I didn’t need much time till I was able to apply my primer right over… Easy to carry in the bag too!
www.elemis.ae

Hair: Kerastase Initialiste
I am a huge Kerastase fan, definitely one of my top favorite haircare brands. This product is perfect as a hair and scalp treatment, smells so good, easy to use with the droplet applicator, and makes my hair so shiny. PS you need to use this for 5-6 weeks to see results. I’m giving away a bottle on myfashdiary.com – Don’t forget to enter! Competition HERE

Primer: Laura Mercier foundation primer
I mean, who knows better about the flawless face than Laura Mercier? Laura and her brand is all about getting that perfect base. I’ve been hearing so much about her primer, and I finally got the chance to get myself a tube. Easy to use, apply it on your fingers and evenly apply on the face – it makes my skin dewy, and my make up stay put. PS the brand is relaunching at Bloomingdales Dubai.

Drugstore Range: Maybelline Fit me range
I tried out Maybelline’s fit me range including the foundation, concealer, blush and pressed powder. My foundation shade was a little too orange, but I loved the dewy finish it gave off. The pressed powder would have to be my favorite – it kept my skin looking hydrated, but definitely blotted out the excess oil look.

Trend: Clinique’s ‘The New Arabic Smokey Eye’
Clinique Middle East have come out with a new trend for the month of February called ‘The New Arabic Smokey Eye’ which features the following products: Quickliner for Eyes Intense in Ebony (great gliding eyeliner), Even better Makeup SPF15 in Cream Rose (light, with great coverage), High Impact Extreme Volume Mascara in Black (what you need for the perfect smokey eye), Bottom Lash Mascara (my latest obsession) and a Long last lipstick in Runway Coral (this was used for Karen Walker’s last show and I couldn’t wait till I got my hands on it) All are available at Clinique counters in the Middle East.

If you follow me on twitter & instagram, you would’ve seen that I covered the beauty backstage at one of my favorite NYC brands, Tibi during New York fashion week Fall ’13. Kimberly Soane of Bobbi Brown was the head artist, and went for the look Bobbi Brown is known best for – a clean, neutral and minimal look. I love how the faces looked fresh, dewy with a light smokey eye. Check out my snaps backstage, as well as the Face chart from the show.

Sorry for the late post on this, I was trying to chase down the face charts as it’s always more interesting featuring them alongside the pictures I took backstage. This season, Laura Mercier worked on two shows during New York Fashion Week. I had the chance to go backstage at Jenny Packham and Pamella Roland Fall 2013. Both shows went for two different looks alongside Laura’s flawless face (which the beauty brand is known for). Roland went for more of a sandy/brown/neutral look featuring gold eyes and coffee bean lips where as Jenny Packham went for a simple flawless face (New York is all about that…) I remember going backstage at Jenny’s show and asking when they were going to start with make up and one of the head artists said ‘we’re all done!’ au naturalle…

Enjoy the pictures & do let me know which beauty look you prefer!

My Visit to the… Hello Kitty Beauty Spa, Dubai.

So, yes, I am a kid at heart. Spent my last birthday at Disney Land, Paris & had to book myself for an appointment at Hello Kitty beauty spa, which I must say is the most adorable spa I’ve ever been to. Located in Town center on Beach Road. The spa is a Mother/daughter concept… Get yourself pampered, while your little one does too. The spa also sell beauty products from a range of different brands by reception, and they also have a Hello Kitty bakery with HK themed chocolate mud cake pops, cupcakes, cookies etc.

You would think that a salon catered to kids would be loud and hectic. Not this one, the little daughters were all blissed out getting their princess nails done, and watching cartoons or a movie on the large screen. I actually went alone, I was tempted to bring my best friend’s little sister though.

I booked in for a hair treatment with hairstylist, Carla. We went for a scalp peeling treatment, which is a scrub for the head followed by hydration from the ends. The treatment included a macadamia hair mask, massage, and oil application followed by a session of steaming to get the treatment soaked within the hair.

I love treating myself to relaxation treatments, so I went for a reflexology massage with the super sweet, Sharon (she is REALLY super sweet.) Believe it or not, there are only a few therapists that great and relaxing reflexology massages that loosen up all your muscles, and this is definitely one of them.

I’m definitely going back!
